In praying the Psalms I was deeply comforted by Psalm 139. This psalm of lament offers the promise that we belong to God and that God will never leave us. ”Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast.” Ps. 139:7, 9-10. This psalm is especially helpful in difficult or uncertain times. We experience this promise of God’s faithfulness in many ways. When we are experiencing hard times we may find God’s comfort in things like prayer, in nature, or in listening to music. For many, including myself, relief and hope come if I can talk through my feelings and thoughts with a trusted friend, family member, or counselor. At Westminster we offer a helpful ministry called Stephen Ministry to anyone who is going through a challenging time and needs a caring person to listen to them. Stephen Ministers offer a caring, listening presence modeled after Christ to those who need support and encouragement. There are many reasons people feel that they may need the support of a Stephen Minister including illness, divorce, financial difficulty, being a caregiver to a family member, change in careers and many others. Stephen Ministers are recruited, selected, trained, commissioned, and supervised by Stephen Leaders. They provide one-to-one Christian care that is confidential and contractual. Typically a Stephen Minister meets with their care receiver about one hour each week. Stephen Ministers serve for two years which includes fifty hours of training, supervisory meetings, and continuing education sessions. We are blessed to have this ministry available to members and friends of Westminster and people in the community. Know that care, support, and prayer are there for you when needed. As always, our pastoral staff is available to you for pastoral care and our Deacons are there also with their hands-on ministry of sympathy, witness and service. If you are feeling alone, overwhelmed, or down about things in your life let us know so we may pray for you and provide the best suitable care for your needs. May God’s spirit that searches and knows us give you strength, joy, and comfort each day! In peace and grace,
