New Code for Outside Door

It has been four years since we installed the security code system for the outside door of our church.  We will be changing the code in July, so those of you who use the code will need to update the number you are using now.  The new code will be in place and you will be able to use your old number through the end of July.  As of August 1st the old code will no longer work.

We have records for those who already have the code and you may call the church office to receive the new number.  Anyone else will need to come by the church office to sign for the code.  For the security of our church it is extremely important that we not share the code number we have received.

Message from Lynley . . .

Thank you, WPC, for the kind words and appreciation you've shared with me as I end my time in service here as the Youth Ministry Coordinator.  It has been such a joy experiencing your support for youth, as well as knowing you better.  The people here are a great treasure!

You, the youth and families of WPC, are dearer to me than you know.  I love you.  I pray for God’s grace, joy, providence, spiritual abundance, and true peace for you.  Integrity of the heart is something that I hope you pursue in Christ unabashedly, as I am convinced the richness of this life is founded in doing so grounded solidly in relationship with Christ– knowing Him, hearing His voice, obeying and trusting in complete surrender.  I am so glad God saw to crossing our journeys.  Thank you for the treasure of these years with you, my friends!

In the love of Our Savior, Jesus Christ,

Lynley Olson, Youth Ministry Coordinator

Ahoy mateys!   Pirates welcome

Are ye ready to find treasures?   Westminster's annual potluck picnic will take place on Sunday, August 3 at Burfoot, Thurston County Park, 12:30 until 5:00pm.  Hunt for booty (kid's treasure hunt) and other games are being planned.   Watch for further details.

Lay Leader Volunteer Needed

Jo Skinner has faithfully recruited our worship lay leaders for several years.  She is now requesting that someone else take over that duty.  The job requires making phone calls to recruit lay leaders for Sunday worship and getting those names to the church office.  Jo has a good list of faithful lay leaders and would offer other helps to anyone who might be interested.  If this is something you might enjoy doing, please call Jo at 438-5192 or you may call the church office.

Sunbeams from Sunshine Preschool

Another terrific school year has flown by.  This year’s animal theme led us to a first-ever visit to Thurston County Animal Services Shelter where the children learned about how to safely greet new animal friends, how to care for animals, and what we can do to help animals in shelters.  Also, there were trips to a nursing home, the pumpkin patch, a Christmas tree farm and the Timberland Library.  In between the field trips were the many learning moments when the children delighted parents and teachers with their unpredictable candor and thought-provoking observations.  A favorite moment was when the small, plastic toy baby Jesus was missing from the playtime nativity set.  Many of the children began shouting, “Oh, no, we can’t find Jesus!”  Suddenly a soft little voice said (emphatically), “He isn’t missing he is right here in my heart.”

The annual end of the year garden parties had 9 special guests.  These “Painted Lady Butterflies” were observed as their metamorphosis from puppa to butterflies took place.  An important life lesson emerged from the Chrysalis when one butterfly with deformed wings prevented it from successfully reaching food and it died.  The excitement to release them had been building for four weeks.  Finally the fly-away took place at the last garden party.

Each year is unique in Sunshine Preschool as God’s plan for each one of us is lived.  The continual, faithful support of Westminster Presbyterian Church lives out God’s plan in so many ways.  Lives are nurtured by caring and loving programs for children and families.  Distinctly Christian early childhood development was fostered in those who attended the 2007-2008 school year.

Summer vacation emerged June 13th when each child was released to spread their wings toward further discoveries beyond this divine space.

With much gratitude, Sunny Petermann,

Sunshine Preschool Director

Camp Quixote:

This is a friendly reminder about the Camp Quixote meeting on July 13 after service in the sanctuary.  Plan to stay after worship for a brief meeting to see if there are at least four individuals interested in exploring whether WPC should host Camp Quixote.

An Interview with Phyllis Ryan:

The theme for Mission and Ministry Sunday on August 24, 2008 is "Children Here and Abroad".  We are recognizing individuals who help make WPC a children friendly place. We feature  Phyllis Ryan in this issue of the Triangle.

How are you involved with children at WPC

I have taught pre-school classes (ages 3-5) in Sunday School periodically for ten years.  I teach when they need someone.

Why do you work with children

I enjoy teaching about God's love for them and getting to know the little ones of the Church.

How long have you attended WPC?

Thirty two years.  I started coming to WPC in 1976 when the church was on State Street and we were new in town.  We had a baby and the church had a mother's room and the people were friendly.  We did not look anywhere else.

Where were you born?

I was born in Benerdan, Wisconsin which is in the south east part of the state I grew up on a cattle farm.

How did you get to Washington State?

I came with my husband, Jim, who was in graduate school.

If you had unlimited resources, what would you like to see happen in Sunday School?

I would like to have more teachers, and continue to have an easy to use curriculum which is based on the Bible.

Are you taking a vacation this summer?

Jim and I are going to visit Jim's Dad in Michigan who is 95 years old.  In addition, we are going to visit my sister and her family in Wisconsin.

Tell us something about yourself that the congregation does not know.

I went to a one-room school (Booner School) in rural Wisconsin for grades 1-8.  At one time, my grandmother taught there.  We have two granddaughters: McKenzie, age four and Nora, age eight weeks.

Vacation Bible School – A Wonderful Success!

Thank you Westminster Presbyterian Church for your continued support of Vacation Bible School (VBS).  This year we served 70 children throughout the community.  Many volunteers contributed a tremendous amount of time to this program and helped make it a great success.  One little four-year-old girl (who is not a member of Westminster) told her mom after the second day at VBS, "Mommy, they really love me."  Truly our work is God's work in loving the children.  Thank you!

Strawberry Shortcake time at Lakefair

Lakefair is July 16th-20th.  That is important because the shortcake booth is a major fundraiser for the Olympia Early Learning Center, (formerly The Olympia Child Care Center).  A lot of us have enjoyed spending a shift or two making and serving shortcakes to the Lakefair crowd.

I will have the sign-up sheet for the next two weeks recruiting helpers for this project.  The booth opens at 11:00am each morning and closes at 11:00 or 12:00 at night.  See me, or call me (357-9674) to get in on the fun.
